PACAYA SAMIRIA EXTREME

Level: Hard
  Duration: 12 days

This specific jungle, " Varzea" (meaning area of periodic flooding), of the Pacaya Samiria is most important in the Peruvian Amazon. In this Reserve there are numerous lagoons and swamps, and an abundant richness of flora and fauna, some of which are endangered.

For example: Black Cayman (Melanosuchus niger) , Puma (Felis concolor) , River Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) , Jaguar (Panthera onca) , Manatee (Trichechus inungus) , Paiche (Arapaima gigas) .

This reserve is also home to thirteen species of primates.

DAY 1-3

- 7 am departure from the Amazon Explorer office by motocarro.
- Car from Iquitos to Nauta (1:30 hrs). Breakfast served.
- Private motorboat, upstream on the Amazon River (320 km).
- Visiting various river communities.
- Arrival at a village located on the Marañón riverbank.
- Accommodation: Overnight in a typical village house. 

DAY 4

- Excursion on a lake.
- Bird watching.
- Motorboat to visit a native community.
- Nocturnal exploration.
- Overnight in a typical village house. 

DAY 5-9

- Boat to the National Pacaya Samiria Reserve.
- Entrance permit to the National Reserve.
- Hike through primary jungle (4 hrs).

During these days we will do the following activities:

- Construction of shelters.
- Short and long walks in search of wildlife.
- Identification of medicinal plants.
- Drinking water from forest vines "Soga de agua" .
- Excursion in search of primates.
- Construction of "Barbacoa" (observatory platform assembled in the trees).
- Identification of animal tracks and footprints.
- Night exploration looking for alligators, snakes, tarantulas and other species.
- Construction of a raft or flotation device
- Overnight in the jungle. 

DAY 10
 
- Return to the Marañón riverbank village.
- Looking for gray dolphins (Sotalia fluviatilis) and pink dolphins (Inia geoffresis) .
- Fishing for piranha (Serrasalmus nattereri) and other species.
- Relax in hammocks.
- Overnight in a typical village house.  

DAY 11-12
 
- Return by motorboat to Nauta.
- Car from Nauta to Iquitos.
- Transfer to the Amazon Explorer office.

Services include: Transfer from Iquitos airport, all land and river transportation, private boat, all meals provided for duration of trip, purified water, permission to the National Pacaya Samiria Reserve, native guides.

Materials: Mosquito nets, sheets, mattresses, hammocks and rubber boots.
Amazon Explorer provides financial support for the village.

Air transport used for expeditions is subject to pre-established dates by the local airline. However, according to weather conditions, flights may be delayed.
